Photography is usually considered a medium of individual expression. The photobook enthusiast platform Phoboko tries to break through the images' individuality.
At the exhibition site in Wong Chuk Hang, there are dozens of black and white photos taken by eight local and foreign photographers in Hong Kong, including themes such as plants, bodies, and cities. Each viewer can choose different pictures according to their preferences or feelings and arrange the selected images in the white zine to create a unique handmade photo book, thereby breaking the limitation of the viewers passively accepting image information.
Some participants cut and collaged photos, some juxtaposed images that might be irrelevant, and some combined words and paintings. Everyone has different creations and interpretations of a photographer's works.
The famous photographer Ansel Adams once said: "You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved." This is true for image viewers and handmade photo book creators, and maybe you can find the answer in the exhibition.
